Carnarvon Gorge
Great Walk

Queensland's answer to the Kimberley

The Carnarvon Great Walk links the Carnarvon Gorge and Mount Moffatt sections of Carnarvon National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty and human history set within the highlands of the Central Queensland Sandstone Belt.
For those up for the challenge, the full circuit walk (87km advertised km, but its more like 100km with sidetracks included), is destined to become one of Queensland’s greatest walking experiences—a true adventure of a lifetime.

Hiking Boots and prevention to blisters

Buy good quality hiking shoes/boots from a professional hiking shop and Buy good hiking socks, Injinji toe socks, Buy a tub of Vaseline or body glide, Buy some sheep's wool, Buy the shoes with a BIG FAT thumb in front of toes, (At least 1 size larger than normal size in shoes) this is for going down hills as there will be no pressure will be on toes. If someone tells you to wear some old joggers/trail runners or some other old shoes from home, ignore them, where we hike you need the ankle support of proper hiking shoes. A twisted sprained ankle would not be great. Learn Lacing Techniques so the hiking boot/shoe does not hurt your foot in any way. For the lacing technique three notches up above your ankle works best. The soles on Hiking Shoes are made tough for an extra 15 kg of weight "Your Pack". Other shoes soles are too squishy and soft for all the extra weight added on your back.

Cut your toenails prior the hike.

Prior -  Watch Video's on lacing techniques.
1.Rub your feet with Vaseline or body glide each morning prior to hiking.
2. Put on your Injinji toe socks and wear under hiking socks.
3.Put on your WOOL Hiking socks.
4. Put on your HIKING BOOTS.

As soon as you feel a slight tiny burn – 'DO NOT' walk on – STOP, SHOES OFF, APPLY SHEEP'S WOOL OR TAPE UP!
I put sheep’s wool  (Fresh from the in-laws wool shed). The softness and the lanolin in the sheep wool helps prevent blisters. Others use tapping method which is great too. You must beat the blister before it arrives. Do not shut the gate after the horse is out.. too late..

Stopping early at the most 'Slightest of burning sensation' is 'vital' to 'Prevention'. Do not think, Morning tea is in half an hour, i will do it then, pull up straight away and 'DO IT'. Do not be embarrassed of pulling the group up to do so.

One of our hikes the blisters were insane. (a picture at at bottom of page)

BUY YOUR 'INJINJI' SOCKS AND 'HIKING' SOCKS, PUT THEM BOTH ON.
"THEN" GO SHOE SHOPPING 'WITH YOUR SOCKS ON' FOR YOUR HIKING BOOTS.
ALWAYS BY HIKING BOOTS 1 SIZE LARGER THAN ALL YOUR OTHER SHOES!!

How To Prevent Sore Toes Hiking Downhill
If your foot is size 8 - buy size 9, always buy one size larger.
Lacing Technique to hold foot at back of the boot.
Undo laces loosely, put foot in boot and stand up, then kick foot to the back of the boot, right back. Do up lace tightly! Once above your forth Notch on your laces, do the first bit, "of what you do when you" "tie your laces"! cross 3 times (as picture) then thread other three notch's!(as per video) Doing this will prevent the laces loosening and then foot moving to the front of the shoe. video here
